CID Ghana Newsletter May 2012
We are very happy to present our newsletter to you. A special one, since it is the first letter in our anniversary year. This year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of CID Ghana. We will inform you about developments in our organization, our projects and volunteer work in Ghana. First of all, we are very happy to introduce our new staff members.
Welcome to our new staff
CID Ghana welcomes three new staff members. The new members have an agricultural background. They will provide technical assistance to CID in order to support farmer based groups to promote food security.
The 3 new staffs are Mr. Thomas Babina, Mr. Ben Iddrisu and Ms. Mary Briamah. These add up to a total number of 5 substantive staffs making a total of 9 staff members in the organization. Due to lack of adequate funds to pay for salaries almost all staffs of CID Ghana are volunteering since the beginning of the year 2012. We thank them for their effort and continued enthusiasm and we hope they have a great time at CID Ghana!
Projects
The last year we became more and more focused on community based micro credit programs. We believe this is a great and sustainable way to support communities in their way of living from an economic point of view. This approach is not new for CID Ghana, we have been working on different initiatives for a while.
CID Ghana collaborates with MASLOC (Microcredit and Small Loans Center). MASLOC is a microfinance apex body responsible for implementing the Government of Ghana’s (GoG) microfinance programs targeted at reducing poverty, creating jobs and wealth. It is a great opportunity for our women to expand the micro credit scheme.
Kukuo Yapalsi - Batik project
We are looking for opportunities to extend the batik market, to keep the women of Suglo Ngbibi women Association of Kukuo Yapalsi and Tampei Kukuo Community motivated and at work.
For the year 2011 90 yards of batik was produced and send to Netherlands. Maddy Schreurs is the coordinator in charge of ordering and marketing the batik fabrics produced by the women group of Suglo Ngbibi women Association of Kukuo Yapalsi and Tampei Kukuo Community. The women are able to benefit from the microcredit funds up to an amount of 150 Ghanaian Cedis each.

Last month, on the 14th of April, ourbatik center of Kukuo Yapalsi and Tampei Kukuo were damaged due to the bad weather. Heavy rainstorms ruined the roof of the community centre.
The Batik project supports the women of the community to improve on their livelihoods and economic sustenance. This is a major blow on both CID Ghana and the women to rebuild the center because of the current financial situation of the organization. CID Ghana therefore appeals for support to rebuild the center in the community to help the women of Kukuo Yapalsi and Tampei Kukuko for operations to continue. New women group in Kukuo Yapalsi
Suglo nyeri buni (Patience can acquire worth) women group of Kukuo Yapalsi a new women group in Kukuo Yapalsi with a number of 25 women. They are called on CID Ghana to give support both financially and livelihood skill training like Tye and Dye or Shea butter process. The group also welcomes any kind of assistance from CID including microcredit program to support their individual trade. The group has since been adopted and registered under the MASLOC microcredit program.
A good looking donation
Soon a lot of children will look extremely nice and well-dressed when attending school. Due to a donation of 90 yard of school uniform material to the Tunteiya M/A primary school in the Tampei Kukuo and Kukuo Yapalsi community in the Tamale metropolis, by CID Ghana office in Tamale on the 15 March, 2012. This will motivate the children to go to school.
We hope to continue our support andgive maximum contribution to achieve universal primary education in the Peru-urban communities in the northern region.
Since the start of CID-Ghana , we have been supporting children from the surrounding communities with schoolfees, books or school uniforms. Right now CID-Ghana supports more than 100 students. Volunteers
CID Ghana has been working with volunteers from abroad since 2003 and believes this is an important part of development both in Ghana and the societies the volunteers and interns come from. At the beginning of 2012 CID Ghana had three volunteers, who completed their voluntary services in January. Two volunteers were picked up from Accra in the beginning of the year. They were lucky: they were just in time to join the sendoff dinner, organized by CID Ghana. Together with the volunteers everybody enjoyed a meal of nice vegetable Joulof rice (with chicken!) in the residence of Mrs. Anaadumba Cecilia.
More volunteers and interns are coming to Ghana this year. Some of them will play part in organizing the 10th anniversary. We are looking forward to meet them.
